THE WARDS. The Board approved the sub-division of the district into wards. The chairman and Mr. Tiscli were appointed to meet Mr. R. McK. Morison with regard to his reappointment as agricultural instructor. TRUANCY. Mr. A. Hooker, truant inspector, reported for the quarter ended 31st March last. He had issued 103 notices, in addition to making a number of personal calls on parents. Fourteen summonses had been issued for hearing at Stratford next month. The inspector complained of the manner in which exemptions were issued at Toko. For the March month the defaulters' return duly came to hand. About a fortnight later in came a batch of exemptions signed by .1. B. Hine, chairman. Amongst them were the names of three children who were not on the defaulters' list. From this he assumed that exemptions were granted wholesale and nuknown to the headmaster. He was going down to inquire, and might be compelled to strictly enforce the law in regard to exemptions Received.
Mr. Ballantvne. inspector of schools, announced last night that a gentleman had offered to provide a trophy to be presented to tlie school having the bestkept grounds. A. peculiar position arose. Hie members "rew remarkably inquisitive on many 'matters connected with Miiionl buildings and repairs thereto, and their questions were hurled at Mr. Sanderson, the architect. To three or four questions the reply was as evasive as Pat's wh»n, in answer to a question whether his master was at home, returned the noncommittal query, " Vlasc, is yer grandfather a monkey? Air. Sanderson was not rude, of course. But his replv, "I didn't sec it. Mr fiths was there," was not very helpful to the Board. Eventually it was decided to ask Mr. Sanderson to bring his partner with him to Board meetings in fu"•Fr'om the time the Cardiff school was taken over by the Taranaki Education Board from the Wanganui Board the chimnev has been a source of continual annova'nee and expense. A history ot the attempts to stop that chimney from smoking would make any bricklayer weep as copiously as the children have often done on cold wintry days, when the smoke made all eyes watery ind smarting before finding its way out That remote chimnev has bothered the Board's architect and half the builders in the district. But now it is believed that its eccentricities have been mastered The architect reported last night that since the hist alteration to the chinney it is drawing splendidly.
