FOOTBALL.

The football season was opened in Wellington on Saturday, the results of the senior games being as follows: Athletic defeated Oriental by 12 points to 7; Melrose defeated Wellington by 8 points to 3; Poneke defeated Southern by 4C points to nil; St. James defeated Victoria College by 24 points to 4; Petone defeated Old Rovs hv 23 points to 15. -

A gathering of the members of the Star Club, with Mr. K. Dockrill, president, in the chair, favewielled Mr. Josspli Thomas last night. Mr. Thomas leaves for Stratford on Friday, and will kike up an important position on the teaching staff of the Stratford District Hign School. Mr. Dockrill referred to the excellent service Mr. Thomas had rendered to the'elub during his residence in the district, and, vu heualf of his club-mates presented him with a travel-ling-bag, wishing him all prosperity in bis new sphere of work.
