"SPEEDING UP."
OPPOSITION OF LABOR COUNCIL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. , Wellington, Friday. A letter from the Premier in reference to the resolution passed by the Council in regard to the exertion wage on the Otira tunnel contract .was read at the Trades Council last night. The Minister said there was no intention 011 the part of the Public Works Department to interfere in the matter between contractors and their employees so long as the contractor paid the Arbitration Court award wages. It was incumbent upon the Labor Department to see that such wages were actually paid when thev related to future contracts. The decision come to in the matter was arrived at only after it had been fully considered. The (President of the Council described the reply as another "shuffle." After discussion the following resolution was carried:—'That this Council expresses dissatisfaction with the communications received from the Prime Minister with respect to the matter of the exertion wage, and considers that the Government should stipulate, in all contracts, that 110 exertion wage whatever be permitted."
