The fi«sh have spawned exceedingly well, except at the Barrier, where the crop is rather disappointing. -Mr. Bennett is considering the advisableness of transplanting; oysters from the more prolific beds to tbe Barrier, being of opinion that by ' mixing the breeds the quality an;l quantity will he improved. Mr. Bennett has nugges'ted to thv Department that the whole of the Gulf should be gazetted iustead of isolated beds as heretofore, so as not to hamper the work of tlie pickers, who, of course, are under the inspector's personal supervision. A STEAMER DAMAGED. Auckland, Friday. The steamer Lauderdale, when being towed out of dock by the Harbor Board's " tug, collided with the wharf and damaged her rudder and propeller. She was redoeked to-day. It is estimated that her repairs will cost about £IOOO. Her departure for Greymouth has been delayed for a week. RAPID CABLISG. Wellington. Friday. In regard to rapid cabling, the Premier has received a letter from Mr. J. Henniker Heaton stating that there were four great inventors who had proved in his presence that they could send five hundred words to a place in thirty minutes over the cables. The 'Premier remarked that the news was most reassuring, for the great obstacle in the way of cheapening cable communication was the incapacity of the cables.
