NIGHT-PROWLER SHOT.

At an citric hour on the morning of 7th April a nian. whose name was given as Augustus Ifmlila. was shot while in the vichiitv of the residence »f MrPercy Taylor, at the curlier of Hourko and 'llarg'rave streets. Carringtou, Newcastle. He was conveyed to the Newcastle Hospital in a precarious condition. About midnight Mr. Taylor, who was superintending stevedoring operations on one of the wharves, received a telephone me.-sage from hi- wife staling that KOiuc person was endeavoring to break into the house, and that she believed he had secreted himself underneath the building. He rang up Sergeant Tiirnbull, and asked that ollicer to |iro--eed at once lo his resilience. The sergeant had jtt-t. reached the house when lie heard a loud report, and .Mr. Taylor appeared about the same instant on the verandah with a smoking revolver in hi. hand, and explained that he had fired the -hoi merely to frighten the man from beneath the house. Ap-pai-cnllv the -hot had the desired effect, for Mr.'-. Tavlor from the other side of the holi-e -uddciik called out. "You've missed him: he's running this way." Darting round the premise-, Sergeant j Tiirnbull and .Mr. Taylor saw a 'man scuttling awav at top speed. The police ollicer called out, "Slop or I'll shoot," and was abuul to draw his revolver, when Mr. Tavlor fired again. The fugi tive. however', failed to -.lop, and for the 1 third lime Mr. Tavlor fired after hint. A cab was procured and the injured nian was taken to the surgery of Dr. Craw-lev. whe making an investigation found in addition to the shot, iu Ike | thigh a bullet wound In the right side of the back. The bullet bad apparently passed al -t through liie bodv. and was embedded under Ibe -kin of Ihc left breast. Dr. Ciawlcv regarded the injuries a- of ..uch a serious nature that the nmbiilan-e was -ent for and the man ! connived !„ the Newcastle Hospital. Iloforc being placed ill the cab the man, in reply lo Sergeant Tiirnbull stated that he was ~ seaman on the steamer I'eriod. which was king at the sulphide wharf. He appeared to be about thirty years of age. and was a foreigner. The hospital authorities thought the patient might recover, although hi,, iu : juries were of a seriou- nature.
