BREACH OF PROMISE CASE
Recently a writ was issued by the Melbourne Supreme Court, on behalf of Klsie I'rsula Potter, of Onnond-road. Wsteinwiek, spinster, against Charles Payne, then of the Clriuni Hotel, .Melbourne, electrician, but now of New Zealand, claiming.-MaOO as damages for lleged bleach of promise of marriage. As defendant did not enter an appearand the case was referred in Ihe Pro ihonutarv of the Supreme Court to assess damages. The case came before him li:st week. 'mhi atiiiiii to-day. I could not wait an-1 'oilier' minute. I fell I must wrile --V • oiiee. I met old Carter, and lie told me ! a lot of things about you which 1 was i so plea-ed to hear. Carter always calls | vou .Mrs I'avne. He is only a bit previ- | uiis, i-n't he ■'. He says, as I have always i said, you are sensible. You miint rememl:fr liiat you are a;i engaged young lady, and must not go gadding all over the place. Well, Elsie, darling, write and say you love me, and that you are not going 'off witit one of those Jew boys. All my love to mv own sweetheart.—Your Charl." Continuing, counsel said that in one of his letters defendant said he was making WOO and £SOO, and he kept three motor-cars. The rrothonotary assessed damages at ;£3OO, with cost.
