TRANSVAAL PATRIOTIC FUND
A meeting of subscribers to tpie Transvaal 'Patriotic Fund was held in the Town Hall last night; Mr. E. Doekrill presided. A statement of accounts showing a balance of £137 Is 7d was adopted. It was resolved that the balance of the Patriotic Fund be applied to assist in defraying the cost of erecting a memorial on Marsland Hill to the memory of the men who fell in the South African war. Messrs E. Dockvill. X. K. MaeDiarmid, W. L. Newman. W. Morev. D. Berry, C. E. Bellringer. Col. Ellis and Dr. Leathani. and the anonymous donor who offered to increase the fund to £2OO if a memorial were erected on Marsland Hill, were appointed a committee to decide what form the memorial shall take. Mr. Doekrill was elected chairman of the committee. It is probable that the memorial will take the form of two obsolete guns to be obtained from Wellington. These will be mounted and tablets bearing the names of the men who fell during the war placed on the mountings. Those present were unanimous that this would make the memorial distinctly commemorative, and would also emphasise the military character of the hill.
