CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE CONFERENCE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. At the Chamber of Commerce Conference to-day a, resolution asking the Government to introduce legislation making provision for the inspection of cargo ( wool and hemp) before shipment with n view to preventing fires was lost.

A motion was tarried asking the Government to approach tlio London Dock Trust with the object of providing storage and better provision for dealing with colonial wool there.

A resolution was adopted calling for the repeal of section 23 of the Local liodies' Loans Act making it compulsory to invest local bodies' sinking funds in the Public Trustee. Motions were also passed affirming that the time had arrived for a reduction of the cable rates, and protesting against the excessive bank holidays. The conference asked that on race days and show davs the banks should be open till noon, anil thai all saints' days should be eliminated as (holidays in hanks anil Government offices.

Mr. Tolley moved that "This conference urges the Government to give special attention to home defence of the Dominion, and considers that the institution of a system of compulsory military training is the fairest, most efficient, and economical means of defence.' The mover considered that the volunteer system had broken down. The motion was passed unanimously after dis ensaion.
