THE MARSLAND HILL MEMORIAL.
To tlic Editor. Sir,—i was immensely pleased lor. ilI Mr. \V. Humphries' letter in this morning's issue of jour paper, for lie buMly asks the question which 1 had failed to answer for myself by wluit rignL iu-e the names of S. 1\ Smith (chairman), \\". 1\ Gordon (secretary), E. Doeki'Jtt (treasurer), and Captain F. S. -Macs (prime mover), inscribed upon one of the tablets of the Maryland iiiH .Memorial* it's a poser, and no mistake. Here Ave have a few gentlemen who have U ell almost forced by Captain Mace lo recognise the justice of perpetual n f .< in some manner the memory of thos- nen who fell in lighting against the Jvi.i-.-iis. The public responded well to the elli.rts of the committee, which, 1 believe, was presided over by Mr. A. Standisii until the brunt of tile work had been borne. Then the few members of the committee who dearly love self-glorifleation decided that their names should go down to posterity together with those of our heroes of old. How pretty! If these gentlemen can show the public any valid reason why their names sliouui encumber the memorial for which the public subscribed, the subscribers woulu doubtless be pleased. Is this a sort of Honorarium? And if it isn't that, what is it? I can call to miiul 110 similar instance of little mindedness and 1 hope! that Messrs S. P. Smith (ciairuian), W. F. Cordon (scert-U ( v 1, J3. jjoekrill (treasurer), and Captain F. S. Mace (prime mover), will not object to have their names inscribed in your columns onoe more.—l am, etc.,
