AN OLD OFFENDER. Received 14, 11.58. p.m. Sydney, April 14. A man named Harold Ritchie was committed for trial on a charge of forging the signature of John Holmes for one pound. Accused stated he had occupied important positions in New Zealand, and had been master of a high school in Dunedin. EARTH TREMORS. Received 14, 11.58 p.m. Sydney, April 14. Two severe earth tremors were registered at the Observatory. The first was on Saturday last, the preliminary movement commencing at 3.35 p.m. and the second phase five minutes later, followed by long waves at 3.43. Severe tremors were recorded on Monday, the preliminary phase at 11.9 a.m., lasting four minutes, and the second phase then commenced, lasting six minutes. The largest wave had an amplitude of three millimetres. The tremors did not cease till 12.56 p.m. NARROW-MINDED ORANGEMEN. Melbourne, April. 14. At the dinner of the Grand Council of the Orange institution, the chairman took the Governor-General to task for attending St. Patrick's Day celebrations. He said the Earl of Dudley as a representative of the King had no right to be present. He hoped his Excellency would beware of the siren tongue which had too ready an access .to the vice-royal ear.
