PATEA RACING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Putea. Racing Club, held on the Egmont Racing Club's course, yesterday. Ideal weather favored the club's operations and the course, which was at first a trifle holding after the recent heavy rains, but dried up after the iirst race, and the going was excellent. Racing was keen and finishes close and exciting. Astraea won the big race after a brilliant finish with Mendip, and the New Plymouth horse, Hydraulic, scored easily in the Flyiii" Handicap and Kakaramea Stakes. Mr. Budge sent the fields away in close order, and the decisions of Mr. A. Pearee, although slow in appearing, were perfectly fair. After the running of the Borough Stakes, Starlike and Valentino were offered for sale, but neither found a buyer, and were passed in at 85 and 50 guineas respectively. Eight bookmakers were licensed, and the totalisator* handled £7364, a substantial increase on last year's 'figures. The Patea Band played a good programme of music, and a pair of strolling musicians lent additional enjoyment to the outing. The secretary, Mr. R. W. Hamerton, had everything in apple-pie order, and the meeting was a most successful one. The following are detail's of the racing:— HANDICAP HURDLES, of 70 sovs.; second 15 sovs. from the stakes. Tokoroa had assumed the lead liefore the straight was reached and passed the stand the first time nearly two lenghs ahead of Chase Mali, Golden Glow, Somali and Recreation lying next. Taupo ran up into third place, running to the six furlong peg, and at four furlongs Tokoroa and Chase Mab struck heavily. Taupo taking the lead. Taupo was kept going and had no difficulty in winning by a length from Golden Glow, who finished fast. Somali just headed Chase Mab in the last few yards, and Flying West was last. Time, 2min 54scc.

BOOKMAKERS AND BACKERS. DISGRACEFUL SCMES AT ELLEKSLIE. Auckland, April 11. A disgraceful scene occurred, at the end of the last race of the Auckland Racing Club's Easter meeting on Saturday. A young man had laid a (lonl)le of'3o to'l with a bookmaker. When Dogger Hank won the last race the backer's hopes had been realised, and he went along to the bookmaker to claim his winnings, C2.) 10s. It is then alleged that the bookmaker passed a wad of notes to a confederate, and turned round to the successful backers with the storv that the cash had run out, but that the money would be obtained from the bank and all made right the next day. Fury thereupon seized the crowd, and things would have gone badly with the bookmaker, his clerk, and tile alleged confederate, if the police had not stepped in and taken a hand. The men were taken to the stewards' stand, but as most of the stewards had departed, nil inquiry was postponed till Monday. The crowd then took a hand again, and things looked very bad for tile two. With many imprecations they were seized by the"throats, by the hair, by the collar, in fact everywhere a hand could be gripped. For the time alt was riot. Totqilants went crashing over the stairs, ilower-beds were trodden upon and crushed, and pandemonium reigned suprelne. Eventually the man paid straight-out odds, and the police got him away. Another bookmaker, who earlier m the day failed to make good his wagers, was witti his clerk brought before the stewards, who, after hearing evidence, ordered his immediate removal from the course, and recommended that no license be issued to him in future, and that he be warned off all racecourses in Xew Zealand.
