Madame Melba will arrive at the Bluff from Melbourne on Easter Mondav. The Dunedan Star states that Mr. F. O. B. Loughnan, solicitor, Palmerston North, has been appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate. A Press wire from Christchurch states that Bishop Julius has appointed Archdeacon Averill Archdeacon of Christchurch, and the Rev. C. 11. Ciossett Archdeacon of Akaroa.
Constable Dudtly, of high-wood, who has been promoted to the position of chief bailiff of the ChrisU-hurch Magistrate's Court, was entertained and presented with an illuminated address by the citizens of Ingrewood on Monday evening.
The Rev. .1. (i. Chapman, who has just concluded live years' successful ministry at Trinity Wt'sleyau Church, and who has been transferred to New Plymouth, was farewelled by his congregation last night, says a Press wire, and presented with a purse of sovereigns and a handsome folding cuke-basket. The new h -adnuister of Wanganui Collegiate School, the llev. J. h. Dove, arrived in Wellington from London by the Ruapehu. .Mr. Dove is wvll acquainted with New Zealand, lie was vicar of Ilunlcrvill \ Wellington diocese, from 18!«) to l!l():i. Then lie returned to England, and became headmaster of Dcnstonc College, Staffordshire. After that he assumed the duties of second master of the famous Durham School. Prior to coming out to New Zealand originally he was for eighteen years a master at Haiieybury College.
" Big Aleck " McDonald is dead. This man was known all over Canada and the United States as the King of the Klondyke. It was lie who made the first valuable discoveries of gold in the Yukon, and he made a fortune of millions. Subsequently imprudent investments carried away the greater part of his money, but with tile residue he set out bravely and, to a large extent, built up a second fortune. He was widely recognised as a large-hearted 'giant* who was willing to give a helping hand to everybody who appealed to him.
