The following are passengers aboard the Rarawa, bar-bound last night at Manakau Heads:—Misses Bates and Petty, Mesdames Stickbury and Petty, Messrs. 0. W. Oram, Dye, Gapper, and six others. The Tablet states that his Grace Archbishop Redwood recently completed his thirty-fifth year in the episcopate, having been consecrated on the feast of St. Patrick, 1874, by the late Cardinal Manning. His Grace, the journal adds, will be 78 years of age on Holy Thursday (to-morrow). The death is announced at Wainj ot Mr. Samuel Hardy, a well-known settler in the Bay of Plenty district. The deceased was one of the survivors of the wreck of the steamer Wairarapa. Mr. Rowley Hill, the lnuch-bemedalled Auckland veteran, who saw service in the Crimea, Mutiny, and uaribauiian wars, lias retired under the age limit from service in the Auckland Defence Stores. Rev. Mr. Hildcr leaves for the Onnra -this morning, where he has represented the Methodist Church prior to coming to New Plymouth. A farewell social is being tendered the Rev. T. G. Brooke by the Methodists of New Plvmouth Circuit to-night. Mr. Brooke leaves for Auckland on Monday evening next to take up the appointment of Connexional Secretary for nouie -Missions. , A Press Association telegram states that ex-Superintendent Tingey, of the Palmerston North Fire Brigade, was presented last night with a gold star for 25 years' service, also with a gold watch and chain on behalf of the piti- t zens of Palmerston, and with numerous other presentations. The presentations were made at a public meeting by the Mayor (Mr. Nash), before a large at-
tendance of councillors, representative citizens, and firemen. Mr Tingey leaves to-day for a trip to Europe. A cable from Sydney announces the death of Sir Julian Emanuel Salomons, KG Born in Birmingham 73 years ago, he practised for many years at the NSW Bar, and was Solicitor-General for some months in 1870, having also a seat in the Cabinet. He was appointed Chief Justice of x\ew south Wales in 1880, but resigned soon after for personal reasons.
