BOROUGH WORKS.
To the Editor. Sir,—Having seen the estimate of the borough engineer ror the ensuing year, 1 was not surprised to iind that thu Council was seriously considering the streetsdepartment with a view to some alterations, as it would require either a streets' loan or doubling the present rate to carry out the programme. 1 note tliey are calling for applications tor a foreman. I therefore presume the experiment of disposing with the foreman has not produced those economical results which the engineer anticipated. But 1 ask, why call for applications wiien they have in their employ Mr. y. Hooker, who acted in that capacity for the two preceding years and proved' himself both a capable and economical foreman? Are they going to throw aside the proofs they have of his capability and accept the advice of someone else and run the risk of having another year like the past? Surely the upkeep of the metal streets will not permit of anv more neglect, and if the amount said to have been expended in the borough during the year just ended is true. I mn confident Hooker would bring the streets up to good order and save at least£ool) on last years expenditure.—l am. etc., E. DOCKRILL! I
