Chief-warder Hawkins, of New Plymouth, is transferred to be duel warder at Auckland. Mr. C. 0. Berg, who has been on the stall'' of the New Plymouth office of the New Zealand Flourmillers' Association for some few years past, leaves on Monday for Wanganui, on transfer and promotion. For the past two years he has filled the office of secretary of the New Plymouth Cricket Club, and the energetic and painstaking way i" which he has carried out the duties, together with his ever-courteous manner and interest in cricket generally, have made him a favorite in cricket circles. Last night a number of members of the club gathered at the Imperial Hotel to wish him good-bye and good luck. Mr. W. C. Weston, president of the North Taranaki Cricket Association, presided, and ia the absence of Mr. E. Whittle, the senior cricket enthusiast of New Piymoutll, presented Mr. Berg with in valuable travelling-bag with his name and the occasion of the gift inscribed on a silver plate, in making the presentation Mr. Weston eulogised the services rendered to New Plymouth cricket by Mr. Berg, who had been indefatigable in " rounding up" players for the teams. It was due to him in no small measure that the juniors had been kept at practically full strength, often under great difficulties. A notable achievement was that last year every member's subscription was collected, and the retiring secretary had been able to produce a very satisfactory balance-sheet. In short, he was a" man who would be greatly missed by the club. lurtlier eulogistic remarks were made by Messrs. A. H. Steeds, J. ii. Jack, V. Elliot, J. Smith, and M. G. Williams, expressive of appreciation of Mr. Berg's services. The recipient suitably returned thanks for the present and the kind remarks accompanying, and took the opportunity of thanking Messrs. Williams and Steeds for assistance given Mm. There was a large gathering last evening at the South Road Methodist Church, when a farewell social was tendered to the Rev. M. J. llilder, who has been transferred to the Ohura district. Mr. ,1. W. Iloon. senior circuit steward, occupied the chair, Luring the evening Mrs. Melsaac, on behalf of the South linad congregation, handed Rev. Ilililer a handsome silver tea-pot. Mrs. Melsaac expressed regret that they were to lose their popular pnstor and his interesting and helpful preaching, and wished him Ciod's blessing and every success in his new sphere of labor. Messrs. 11. Black, E. Chattcrton, and J. Gibson also conveyed expressions of Goodwill and regret at the transfer of Mr. llilder from this district, anil Mr. I Gibson made an announcement to the | effect that their minister, in going to Man«-aroa to take up the work there, was "going "in double harness." Rc\. T. G. Brooke, the circuit minister, delivered a farewell address, expressive of the loss that would tie by the circuit in the removal of the Rev llilder from their midst. He referred to the Methodist Church system of itinerary as one which gave clergymen a. varied and valuable experience, enlarging their sphere of usefulness, lie said he knew of no young man in the connexion who was belter lilted lor the work ill the Ohura district than was Hie guest of tite evening. The Rev. llilder, ill replying, said he had to thank the South Road and New Plymouth people for many kindnesses. Speaking of his new charge, ae s.ml that the Ohura was in the backldocks to-day, just as Stratford had been ;>() years ii.ro, and the settlers were undergoing trials such as New Plymouth had conquered long ago.
