NAVY LEAGUE CONCERT.
The Theatre Royal was fairly well lilled last night, principally by juveniles, for the Xavy League's concert. The dress circle was well filled with adults, but in the stalls the cadets and schoolhoys mustered en masse. The attendance, whilst satisfactory, was not what should have greeted the efforts of the local branch of the League in its endeavor to present to the public an instructive entertainment without cost to patrons, and to instil in the minds of the people still greater pride of race, with a view of furthering the work of the Xavy League. The Mayor (Mr. Tisch) presided. The entertainment consisted largely of the exhibition of a number of capital slides with an excellent lantern, the pictures being all that could be desired in iixed plates. Their Majesties King Edward and Queen Alexandra were the subjects of tlie first two, and the pictures were greeted with prolonged cheering. The audience followed intently the series depicting the development of the British Navy from the days of the galleons to Lord Nelson's "Victory,' the first ironclad, the first turret-ship, and various types of the modem engines of destruction. The juveniles were quick to recognise the late Lord Nelson's picture upon the screen. Mr. C. T. Mills, who explained the various slides, then passed on'to a series dealing with British Army life. The Mayor contributed to the evening's entertainment some interesting remarks on his recent trip Home, along the lines of lantern slides of scenes he visited. The humorous portion of the entertainment was not neglected, and the building fairly rang with the hearty laughter of the audience.
During the evening Mr. W. Perry sang ''The Death of Nelson," and this most popular singer received an excellent reception for a capitally rendered item. Mr. T. C. Sehnackenberg's 'The Deathless Army" was greeted with a rousing encore, and lie responded with "Sons of "the Sea." The accompaniments were played by Miss Perry and Mrs. Schnackenberg. A collection was taken up in aid of the expenses.
