DISTRICT NEWS.
TARATA. Arrangements were made for a picnic and "social" to farewell Mrs. Andersen, but the day fixed upon (last Friday week) was very wet, so t'lie picnic had to be dropped. The ''social" 'was postponed to Tuesday evening last, and was a very great success. Between forty and fifty persons assembled in the hall. Dancing by the young people and games of cards by the more sedate occupied the principal part of the evening. Mr. Chapman, oil behalf of the settlers, presented Mrs. Andersen with a pretty and valuable handbag. Tn doing so he spoke of the kindness and goodness of Mrs. Andersen during her sojourn ill Tarata, of the number of friends she liad made, and of their regret at her departure, especially as the cause of her leaving the district for Canterbury was ill-health. Ho wished her every happiness and improved health ill her new home. Mr. C. Andersen feelingly replied, thanking t.liassembled friends both for their kindness .to his mother and for their valuable present.
