ARMY TRAINING.
AX IMPORTANT MEMORa-MA'M. The Imperial General Staff has issued a memorandum of interest to volunteers in New Zealand and elsewhere, with reference to the training of forces at Home and in the British dominion*. The memorandum has been prepared with the object of drawing attention to regulations affecting training about to be published, modifying the existing regulations, of reviewing the progress of training during recent years, and of endeavouring to inlluence training in certain desired directions. It touches upon the question of direct and indirect artillery lire, and states that a solution as to which is tinbetter is not likely to be arrived at for some time to come. Cnt.il the artillery has still further developed its power of dealing with moving targets by indirect lire without loss of time, the only possible course to take is to insist that positions for indirect or direct tire mintbe taken up in accordance with the tactical situations.
The new course of musketry (ruining have been designed, states the memorandum, with regard to such conditions as invisibility of target, effect of hostile lire, necessitating the use of cover, etc. It is also stated that sufficient importance has not been attached, nor sufficient attention paid, to training in machine gun practice. Instructions in regard to this will shortly be issued.
