Mr Tafl, PresiJent-elect, accompanied by tile consulting engineer*, completed lecentlv the inspect inn of the Panama Canal 'works, and announced that no change would be made in tile plans for a lock canal. This ends the prolonged war with the critics who favour a sealever canal. and denounced the (lalmi dam as unsafe. At the conclusion of the inspection, Colonel Goetluils. the chief engineer of the Tstllmian Canal Commission, said to Mr Taffc, "T. onn promise you Chat ships will lie passing through the Panama Canal bv New Year'' Day. 1013."
