GERMAN SJIOHKS TO SOUTH AMEUICA.
The lirst section of the new German submarine cable, to South American j countries will be laid during Mill). This, is purely German enterprise, conducted by the' German South American Telegraph Company, which was founded at Cologne in August lam. The cable will leave Germany at Borkum in the North Sea, and will run to Tenerill'e, where a cable station will bei erected by virtue of the permission! granted by tho Spanish Government in .lime, 11107. It has not yet been decided, whether the cable shall then be laid l directly from Tenerill'e to PernnmlmcoJ or whether it shall also touch at via, the capital of Liberia. I It is almost certain, however, that 1 till! Willie will be laid from Tenerill'e. to I Monrovia, and thence, across the sontli-1 era Atlantic to l'epiaiiibm-o. The total length from Borkum to Pcrnambnco, by way of Tenerill'e and Monrovia, '3 approximately 7000 miles. The cable is now being manufactured in the. North German submarine cable works in Nordenham on (ho Weser. The first section to Tenerill'e will be laid this summer. It is also anticipated that the second section, from TencrilTe to Monrovia, will lie laid before the end of the year. _ The last section, from Monrovia to I'ernambuco, will be completed early in 1010. The German Government have granted Vhc company a subvention, anil German ecmmercial firms established in South American countries have promised active support to the new enterprise.
