TARANAKI AUTUMN MEETING. WAITAPU WINS THE CUP.
The Taranaki Jockey Club was favored with typical Taranaki autumn weather, glorious blue, sky and passing clouds, for the opening - day ■ of the autumn meeting. The course was in splendid facing-trim, fields large and! racing interesting. For an oil day the attendance was much above; the average, and yesterday's racing marks a distinct improvement in the " sport of kings" in Taranaki. The lawns bore their green mantles as, m springtime, and the large number of ladies present.with their gaily colored toilettes .served to paint the ~ prettiestof racing-panoramas. Most of the fields carded were in full strength, and investors found winners fairly difficult to pick. The Cup drew a fine field of a dozen runners, most of the candidates being well backed. After a fine race the Foxton-trained Wnitapu won wither comfortably froin Mahuta, who finished* second to Uhlando last year. Locally .owned horses-failed to run up to expectations, but,,as usual, Hawera equinta showed consistent winning form. The starting was first-class in all events, with the exception of the Flying Handicap. in" which' nothing had a chance with-Wiikaraka, who was the only runtier tt> leave the barrier at all promptlv. Mr. George Morse framed his handicaps - Wl,; interesting flhishes and" dig dividends, being, the: order of the day. Seventeen bookmakers paid £2O each to "lay the field," and appeared to do a thriving, business, their icliints being largely composed, of the gutter.. sex. The Tara--s?* Band, under conductor G. H. Sfrofiders, rendered' a long musical programme "in "their usual efficient manner. Mr. K. Whittle, of the Red House Hotel, dispensed" cooling beverages in the publican's booth, and Mr! °J. H. . ThO»pik)i*catt?ed «at»factorily. Mr. E. P. Webster and the committee had the . . well forward,-and everything {»ssed off amdothlv. The following are details of the racing:— KAWAROA HANDICAP HACK HURDLES, of flOsovi; second lOsovs. from the stakes; one mile and a lull. T. Sweet Alice would not face the tapes, and was eventually 1 left several lengths. Speciosa immediately rushed to the front and took the first hurdle slightly in advance of Whimper and Waimaria. The Bame order was kept to the straight, Sweet Alice haying run up to her field. Going out of the straight Speciosa in- • creased her lead to three lengths, and although Waimaria made desperate ef- * forts to lessen the gap, the leader was not to, be denied, and won very easily by over a length from Whimper,"with Waiinaria some distance away third, Tile others made an indifferent ahowng. lime, 2min. 48sec.
