XAKAXAKI JOCKEY CLl'li, AUTUMN MEKTIXU. tll.v " Moturoii rill- aiiiiiitiii iiKM'ting 01 the Taranaki Jockey Uub take* pbav to-day and tomorrow. The number of visiting horwes •i> umi-ually la-rg:*, and a record meeting i* expected. Ihe races are verv open, and punters will require lu k;-ep their brains active to son out the prads that pay l lie dividends to-day. Mr. C. 0 Connor will sli]» the field's, and willi tliti course in tip-tup order, splendid racing should he witnessed. The liriii event, the Kawaroa liurdl-s,
start a t noon, aud punter.*' puzzles start lifslil nwiiy. iloukibv, the tap-weight, has hoe il gullivpiiig well i>iym K h to wnrl'ltiit respeel, ami Whimper, SpiM.'iosa, ami Taupo ran, proniinvntlj- ;it WaiTonjratu. Wainia.via will liave tli • services of A. JkComion, hut (iolden (ilow shaped very imlill'ereiitly at (Ipunake, nn'-.l is hardly quick enough over hi* fences to command respect. Tlw Stewards' Handicap, run over Jivv: furlongs, 'will he contested by ;t good field. Mon Anil, who its also engage;! in the I'lying Handicap, ran lialf-a-mile in resolute fashion yesterday morning, and is in line fetlle. Kereroa, who is to hv oll'ered for saU' afl T the meeting,
is not displaying attractive form, hut t'vrene, who tigurcs next on the list, iii at lii- best again, (ienuiue has a record for eonsisle'iuVv, aiiul will be piloted by the successful horseman, ]{. ilaU'li. Of tin* otlii'rs, To Kauharangi represents the powerful l'rosser .stable, ami Overtime won at Wiirrengati?. The Pukaka Hack Handicap presents Tanekaha in the iposition of topweight. The bay son oi St. Paul is a good home over the distance, but the
weight will probably trouble him to-day. Mnlga Hill, won at Wanganui, and Hydraulic beat a poor fold at Opunake, both horses showing improved form. Clemora is not overburdened' with avoirdupois, and of the others Durability has been galloping in first-rate style. A good race is expected. The Taranaki Cup, tub over a mile and a-quarlor, claims a dozen acceptors. Tail San, the last of the twelve, arrived last night by the 7.30 train, and the whole crowd caixlod are likely to see tin. post. The following are tile likely riders in to-day'* Cup:—Kilmarnock (F. Coleman); jVlahuta (N.Campbell); Tan San ((i. Price); Uhlando (B. Deeley); Sir Artcgal (R. Brown}; Yasa (11. Ha.tth); Taitoko (C. Jenkins); Waitapu (W. H. McKay); Belario (I{. Young); and Chanteuse (j. Buchanan).
Several others are to be arranged to-
Mr. A. Robertson is considered unlucky to take on to-day's race with 8.12 against the .name of Kilmarnock, and the Wanganui Cup-winner would probably be better suited by a longer course. Mahuta has only won once sinces running second to Uhlando in the Taranaki Cup of 1008, but is in good form for this year's event. Tan »San \xm very comfortably at Wanganui, but is rather high in the weights. Uhlando was moving as well aft anything on the trade last week, but has gone oil' a
little. Tiptoe is said to have conic on a lot since Wanganui and will need it all. Sir Artegal has been galloping as well as anything oil the local tracks, ami although lie lias not won over a lonprer distance than a mile, he always finishes 'well in his racefi, and promises |to stay. Vasa ran well :it Dannevirke, 'but Taitolio hardly showed his true form at Wanganui and is alleged to Ibe capable of better things. Clianteuse I ran an indifferent second in the mud to I Woodhey in. the Napier Park Cup last [ 'week and will l)e better suited by the linn going. Whehunarania showed" winning form at Hawera, but has yet to earn a certificate for a longer race than j a mile. Belario is lightly handicapped on his running 011 the second day at Wanganui, and claims admirers. To-day's Cup promises to be a fine.belting race, anil with ordinary luck the local prads should give the outside "hot stuff' a good go for the money. The consistent Waikaraka heads the haudioap in the Frst Welter, but a sixiurlOTig race is more to his liking. Belario may start in the Cup. Coni]wss is reported to luave improved a lot, and Kaniwarra has lieen pleasing the Waitara touts liv the resolute way in which he has been leaving the landscape behind. Perolinn has nothing but breeding to recommend her, and the others are not greatly fancied. Of the nine engaged in the Kaitnke Hack Handicap, Research won at Warrengate and Paul at Opunakc, hut the latter was not up against anything solid, and will have to do better to have a chance to-day. Eoliepotae is getting down to it in great style, and is not over-weighted. The Plying Handicap present* another conundrum' -which punters will possibly lose, coin over. Moriarty showed a turn of his old speed at Wanga-niii, and galloped pleasingly yesterday morning, covering six furlongK in 1.10. Lady Meuschikofl is probably the fastest Hying machine <m the coast for her size, as klic demonstrated when she downed the "hot-stuff" Lady Medallist at Wanganui, and her connections are (]iute satisfied with the way she has lieen shaping during last week. Golden Eagle has showed in-and-out form this season,, and is certainly a great six-furlong performer when caught in the mood. }lon Ami, Waikaraka, Wlietuinarama and tile others are engaged in other events, ami we cannot guage their prospects at time o'i writing. The Hack Scurry, with twenty-one entries, has drawn a great crowd of untried horses, of which Golden Loop has hecii showing good track form. The consistent Clemency has run a number of seconds oi late. There should he 110 scarcity of fish in town to-dav, as all the "sharks" arrived bv last niglit'e mail train. ' As an example of the unlimited cheek exhibited by the "guessing" fraternity, the following Trill take some beating. A. eli n ap-flash Youngster steered his way into a local dm—;:.,t's establishment ( yesterdav, and calmly demanded a l>ot- j tie of physic. The medicament was , forthcoming, but the guesser, evidently sizing the chemist's assistant up as a mug,"said: "Just you put this down to 111 c; I'll pay you to-morrow night after the races." ' But the pill-builder was not of tile green-horn variety, and replied: "Yes; that's all right. You'll «et the phvsic to-morrow night after the rates also." But the stranger was not to be bumped so gently, and tried his old game. Putting 011 his usual know-all air he assured the shopman, "I'll put you m\ to something that 'abolutcly can't lose' to-morrow, if you give me. the medicine," but the shopman smiled knowingly and replied: "It's nil vigHit, young man. I've got. all the winners' sorted out for myself." and the nicsser, with a final moan about the hard world and the man who won't get rich quick whi-a he gets the chance, faded 'from view, and ca>h transactions weiv once more the order of the. da) in that pharmacy. It is a common .joke in these parts to riii" up the Press office with stavtliug information relating to horsc-rncing-and' when a pair °f know-alls, hitched 011 last night and proceeded to let their ima"inalions get. the better of them, this" scribe listened with the tired ear of a man who is up to his eyes in work and the pubs, are shut. These individinls aired their ignorance 111 alarming fa-hion, and their fabrications were too palpable to demand credence, they nnv rest assured that their "mfornia--1 died a quick and happy death and i! .w reposes peacefully in the wastep.iper basket!
