('EUMAN SIIOIiES TO StJI'TH AMERICA. The first section of I lie new (loi'iuau submarine cable lo South American countries will be laid dining 111110. This is purely Herman enterprise, conducted by the'deruian South American Telegraph Company, which was founded at Cologne in August bun.
The .able will leave Ceriuauy a| iioi'-1 kuni, in the North Ken, and will run to Tenc'rill'e. where a cable station will be erected by virtue of (he permission granted by the Spanish (love.-nmint in June. P.MI7. It has not vet, been decided whether tlie cable shall then be laid directly from TciicritVc to l'ovuaiul.uco. or whether it shall also touch at .Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. It is almost certain, however, that the cable will be laid from Toiiciillc lo Monrovia, and thence, across the southern Atlantic to l'ernunibiico. The total length from ISorkiini to IVrnanibiieo, by way of Tcncrill'e and Monrovia, Is approximately yIHW miles. The cable is now being manufactured in the. North fieriimn submarine cable works hi Nordenham on the Weser. The first section to Tcncrill'e will be laid this summer. H is also anticipated that the second section, from TenerilTe lo .Monrovia, will be laid before the end of the year. _ The last section, from Monrovia to IVrnamlmco, will be completed early in 1(110. The German Government have granted Viie company a subvention, and Herman commercial firms established "> South American countries have promised active support lo the now enterprise.
