ST. PATRICK'S CONCERT.
The> committee responsible for the i;iauynratioii of the St. Patrick's convert on Wednesday evening at the Hroug'liam Street liiall as to 'be 'complimented upon 'the sutecss 'achieved. Tliie leathering "was a large one., (there being insufficient seating aei'onilinodalion. A varied programme wiw -submitted, each item being well .received. The thall was nicely decorated with evergreens and national -Hunting, the "Harp of Krrn" and Ireland's national flower being conspicuous. The iinst item on 'the programme was a solo' by Air. llnslam, who was quite I sui-'cesAfui in his rendering of '*oll' to Philadelphia." Messrs .Mclilwan and Cornwall, maaidoli-n and guitar, .received a good hearing for their rendition of "Irish lAiivs." The next item, a solo by Miiss Ward, »wa.s one oi the best during Ihe evening. This young lady h> the possessor of a sweet and fivll-toned voice, and for her singing of "Oh, .Steer Buy Jlarqui' to Kriii's Jsle, v an encore was <leinanded. Jlr. F. (Uonnwall next nang "The Irish Immigrant,' an item that wais given wiih nice exjuession. A xylophone soln bv ]\liss (J. L'algar was as ii was novel. "The Dear Liit'tle Sliainrock''is a song dear to every «on and diuigliter of Krin. This number was given in a most li'nv'lied manner as a 'quartette, the blending of the voices being distinctly good. Tlie .\Jis<es Jhivkma.li ami Messrs (Juy and Jennings, who W'ere responsible for this item, are to be conipiliniented upon their sueves*. .Air. Ilaslam WiH in good voice for "The 'Minstrel ,l»o\v and had ( [o respond, giving as an em-ore "Father O'Flynn/' A banjo duet by Messrs Ncott and Cornwall met with approval, as did a piano duet "by Misses K. n;id D. JJennett, an encore being demanded for the 'atter. Mr. Farmer had to face the footlights a second time for liis reekation. Miss ]Uicl\inan ncNit contTi'bnted a« f?-010 in a sweet and linislied ,manner and had to respond ito a well-merited encore. iMr. ,1. J. Sullivan delivered a shoo-t and interesting address on "Irish affairs, past and present, *' his oratorical effort coining as a surprise to many. ■ AVe give his peroration:—"With grant of a large, a. liberal and generous measure of self-government to Ireland, •I do not see any reason why Ireland .should not develop Jie-r own- resources •in accordance with, the genius >of her people and in perfect friendliness to Ureal Britain. The Iriish people do not want a mean or petty measure of selfgovernment wrung either from fear or necessity. They want a settlement of Ireland* claims 'which can be regarded as a. national settlement, a great and generous act of atonement oil' the part of tlio British people, one that will touch the heart of Ireland, in which the memory of past wrongs will be buried and a hopeful era opened both for Ireland and for England." Mr. F. Cornwall waa responsible for the arrangement of the programme. Tt is the intention ,of Die committee to make .the concert an annua-1 lixture, a*ad it is proposed to hold -next year's function at the, Theatre Koyal. 'The hall was then cleared fordancing, and despite the warmth, the floor was fully occupied. The arrangements "were distinctly good, and a thoroughly enjoyable time wan s]>ent. Music was supplied .by Mns. A. Ceorge (piano), and Messrs'-Saunders (cornet) and Salt (violin). The duties of MX', were in the capable hands of Mv. J. A. Clarke. Extras were played by Miss Jennings anil others.
