LIFE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

The following are extracts from a letter from a gentleman in British Columbia to a friend in Wanganui :—"Since writing you we have had our eye teeth cut about cold weather. It took a tumble just after the New Year to U below zero, and 0 below was our hottest moment for ten days. There was quite a strong breeze from the North nearly all the time. It froze up my water pipe, shutting off the supply, sb I have the pleasure of hauling about half-a-mile water in barrels for household purposes and 25 hogs that I am failing to fatten on boiled potatoes. Everything freezable in the house, even the bread, froze solid in spite of all the fire we could pile on. Several mornings when I woke up my moustache was frozen to the bedclothes so that 1 had to pull them apart. I find about 10 below very pleasant weather when it is quite calm, but, let there be the least breeze, and I'd rather be excused. We up here are jubilant that our district has sustained its reputation for mild weather ; they had it 32 below atVeraon, and 2(1 down at my brother's. My brother was in a little miserable tent part of the time, and then moved into a half finished log-cabin—poor beggar. The fact that a ehinook wind had got away with most of the snow jiatj before the cold snap leaves room for me to be just a little nervous as to the fate of my young trees. We have had a good deal of snow and much warmer weather during Hie last 10 days. Jack started to go to school just a week ngo. He has about two miles to go, with a long steep hill, and the snow makes it hard walking. He tackles it like a man and makes no demur about going."
