Fishing in the ltaknia river, about a mile from the mouth, some days ago, Mr. W. D. Lawrence caught a genuine Californian salmon, weighing s</ 4 !hs. This is said to be the first lish of its species caught here with a rod anil line that has been scientifically identified, although many people have claimed to have en light this variety. The full was identified by Mr. B. M. Moorhousc as a Californian salmon, and Ids opinion was confirmed by Mr. E, I>. Waiie, curator of tne ! museum. Several of the fish have, of course, been caught in the net, but it is suggested that perhaps the fisli will niter their habits in new waters and afford sport to anglers. KAIX AT FF.IUJINO.
