(From Our Own Correspondent). The annual picnic in connection with the Hillsborough school took place on Thursday last. The children appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. In the evening there was a large attendance at the hall. The chairman of the School Committee had arranged with Mr Tisch (Mayor of New Plymouth), and he very kindly eauie out from town and, with Mr. J. C. Jlorey, exhibited a considerable number of lantern views for the amusement of the children. Mr. Tisch, in presenting the prizes to the scholars of the different standards, warmly congratulated them on their ability, and referred in highly eulogistic terms to their efficiency in the different items rendered by them, and also spoke of the good feeling evidently existing between the School Committee and the teachers (Miss Stephen, head teacher, and Miss Rice, assistant). A word of thanks is due to the ladies who dispensed the good things supplied by Mr. A. Lealand. The usual dance followed, excellent music being supplied by Miss Bishop. Messrs. E. Locke and L. Bishop acted as M'sC. RAHOTU. The shooting competition for the trophy presented by the Rahotu Rille Club was continued on Saturday, after an interval of several weeks, owing to practise for the Taranaki Association meeting. The conditions were' 7 shots each at 200 yds. and 300 yds. Some good shooting resulted, the winner timing up in J. Rothery. This is his second win. The trophy has to be won twice I in succession or three times at intervals before being won outright. Sub-
A. Chapman 24 (i 30 A lire occurred at the Opunako Sawmilling Company's Kahui Road Mill on Thursday last, resulting in the loss of. two men's whares, office, and blacksmith's shop. The tire occurred during the day. when all the men were in thCj bush, and is supposed to have originated in a bush chimney Two of the men. 'Messrs. Barratt and Christian, lost all their belongings, the latter also losing £8 in notes. Had the wind been blow-1 ing towards the mill, nothing could have, saved that building, as well as a stock of timber.
The dvy weather is causing tlic roads to be very rough, making riding and cycling far from pleasant, owing to the loose stones. The county foremen, however, are raking up the loose stones and collecting them with a view to future patching, and this is greatly improving the roads. AYe are lieginning to wonder when it is going to rain. Several times lately the sky has been overcast, and weather prophets have prognosticated rain,'but, unfortunately, the atmosphere has cleared and our hopes have been (metaphorically) damped. The contractors for the erection of the Rahotu Hall arc making good progress with the work, and will have the building completed within the contract time. Local residents are already proud of their hall, and instead of having the worst hall on the coast, Rahotu will soon own the best. The committee is nothing if not progressive, and intends lighting the new structure with acetylene gas.
