This, was tin' Canterbury Match. !im,yil„ ;uiil WOO yds. tea shuts at each taiijii-. For tin 1 lirst couple of hours almost shooting gallery c-omlitiuiis prevailed. T'liiMu was an entire absence of wiiul and a guud light favorml competitors, whose only troulih' consisted of a .slight mirage-anil great heat. Shortly before 10.30 a rear k'ft wind sprang up, which subsequently freshened anil changed its direction anil varied ibetween five and thirteen degree* right through the day. The i-liar-acter of the wind alLeeteii the marksinen to some extent. There was nevertheless, some excellent .-hooting exhibited. Squads that went down at first had all the best conditions;, but it so happened that only a few were men who had got to the aggregate list of fifty wired on the previous, day. These came to the mound later and did good shooting. Excliaiupion King, of Linwood, who wan runner-up for the load last night, has, now taken the lirst position, with an aggregate of 411. Duncan, of Millerlon. who held the -ninth position, is runnerup three points behind the leader. Cur, who was yesterday on top, is live points behind King. Corp. Patrick still retain., third .place. It looks as if Captain King may be able- to repeat his Wanganui performance of 1899, when he had a runaway victory for the belt.
In the shooting in the semi-final stage of the championship series, Nelson (Canterbury) made the only possible. (Needham "(Palmerston North), Morrison (Dimedin).and A. Turner (Lincoln) each registered one short of the possible (50). A number of service matches were got on" during the day, and some good shooting; was recorded. The loophole match, which wan concluded to-day, showed a remarkable score by Eilleman JlcLeay, of Opaki. In -the allowed time of one minute he got the possible of ten bullseves.
Col. Somervillc, formerly executive ofieer of the Rifle Association, was on a isit to the grounds to-day. The colonel i father of the Association, having been ts chief for 20 years, and it was he who riginally laid out the Trentham ranges.
