FIRE IN CHINA.
THOUSANDS 1)1' LIVES LOST. Sydney. March 10. The Port Darwin mail brings details of Hie terrible eoiillagration of flower I boats (in the Pearl river, near Canton. Nearly all the boats were consumed, and cuiwed the loss of a thousand lives, the majority being drowned. The eoiillagration occurred oji a Saturday night, when many parties were being given by mandarins. A panic of tin.' wildest description prevailed.. Hundreds of people seemed ■to be. jumping into Ihe water to save themselves from lire. Many people were, saved, but over 200 clmrred corpses* were discovered up to Sunday afternoon.
It is apparent ihat- the boats were heavily laden with luimsuiity. . It is said that many mnndarhs were among the burned, and that ten tankers and a number of prominent business men were also among the vk-tims.
The fire is supposed to have originated through the falling of a kerosene lamp.
