BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Mr. A. H, Kendall, liuiuugh engineer, reported tu the Borough Council on Monday evening as follows: Water works.-The .Mill lioad main a Iteration is just ou completion, aud I ~ ia ' ,u tu J'ai'ouse with several of the workmen. 1 have endeavoured to push ou with this work, and also with le by-pass at Mangorei, as much as possible during the present favourable weather; Uie town main was shut oil' lor a few hours during the week in older to make the necessary connection therewith, and I am without knowledge of any inconvenience laving been caused thereby. Of course, careful consideration was given as to the most favourable time during which io oo the work, which was carried out during til" night and morning of the Ist and 2nd instants. Several applications for wate.connections have been received, and the work in every case carried out as promptly as possible. Sewers.-i Several connections have been made and drains laid since the last meeting of your Council. I Streets.—With regard to Mr. Wright's application for tlie improvement of I'endarves Street near his property I be» to report that this will entail the bring 0 »>g of the street to its lull width and extension and also the extension of the I .culvert. There is 110 doubt that this is a very necessary work, Imt the cost would be about £4O. Messrs. Russel v'i) *v'' 9 for an approach to ■N.K. No. 15 will lie somewhat more costly than the approach to the Lovers Ualk on the other side, a 3 the spoil will not be so conveniently near as it was in that case. In my opinion this is one of those places which might very well be used for the deposit of inoffensive rubbish, to he covered with spoil and street cleanings until the desired ond is obtained. To make a narrow track with spoil or earth only would cost £2o. Metal.—At the abattoir reserve the nycv having lately been abnormally low advantage has been taken of the circumstance, and (100 or 700 yards of boulders have been secured therefrom, and at a priee which will, when I submit particulars shortly, prove to be cheaper than previous contract, prices received. Rubbish Depot,—l beg respectivelv to recommend that the new rubbish depot be placed in a locality to be from time to time approved by your Works Committee.

Infectious Diseases.—Several cases of infectious diseases have been reported and dealt with by the Inspector. Many of these have been brought into town from places outside. Kerb and Channel.—This authorised work is well on towards completion.
