RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE TRENTHAM MEETING,

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Trentham, Last Night. .Shooting began at Trentham at 8 o'clock this morning, under favorable weather conditions, save that a left rear wind, somewhat tricky, tended to affect scoring. The matches ordered for the day were the Wellington match, 500 and <IOO yards, ten sho-ts at each range; Die SOO yards of the Otago match, and ft couple of extra matches at 500 yards {'.ml 1001) yards ranges. | The morning .squads in the champion-

ship tiring had all the best of it, fjr the wind freshened up .u the afternoon. The scoring boards siiowed a decided falling-oil' in marksmanship. Shooting was good all round at the 1500 yards stage jI thi Wellington match, and five possibles were registered, and there were three *' all huts."

-Milrov had bad luck at this stage, and otilv secured 30, thus putting him down several points lrom the leading position 'he had occupied. Boys also fell oft', getting only 41 out of a possible 50. No possibles were made at the 000 yards, and the Wellington match was won by (.Jrindell, of Napier, with a total of 95—40 at 500 yards and 4G at 000 yards. Patrick (Auckland) and Chtag made 04.

The 800 yards stage, of the Otago match, ton shots, entered upon iu the morning. was continued throughout tlie day, those who shot early having a decided advantage, as indicted by tile number of possibles, eight being registered, while in the atternooi the highest scores were coniined to " all huts." Possibles were secured by Smith (Hastings), Shanks (Gore), Craw (Chorlton), Storkey (Napier), John 1-reston (Auckland), lluwuiler (Nelson), and Humphrey (Uawke's Bay), The runners-up were Sole (Blenheim), Loveday (Oliura), Franklin (Weber), Deihl (Daunevirke), l)ouns (Oliura), Bulford (lvaron), MeConnell (Uhristchureh). Tlie following were successful in scoring 48 each—Mackay (Dunedin), Beckinghaui (Timaru), Atkinson (Auckland), Henry (Opaki), Black (Orepuki), llollard (liaponga). The competitors who scored 47 were fairly numerous. The younger shots experienced great difficulty in linding the bull, as the wind in the afternoon was most deceptive, and, in a great many instances, it was no unusual sight to see the boards with a succession of twos and threes following up lives. One interesting feature in the morning squad was a board with 20 consecutive bulls. PRIZE-LIST.
