A MADMAN'S ACT.
CAUGHT IN TIME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. Al the Police Court to-day Clarence Matthews, a man about 22 years of age, was arrested at Magara on Saturday evening and charged with theft of clothing, valued at £3, and with (lischarging a revolver at a man named Wilson with intent to do bodily harm. Accused was not in n fit mental condi--1 tion to appear and was remanded. He had 'been confined in a cell during the night, and while there made a most determined but unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide. The constable in charge of him left him for a few minutes apparently resting peacefully, but during the nonstable absence accused attempted to hang himself with a piece of his blanket. He tied one end round the grating above the door and the other round his neck, after standing on a bucket, and then he kicked the bucket away and would certainly have died had the constable not returned in. time. Matthews has since been declared a lunatic and sent to Seacliff.
