ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DROWNED WHILE BATHING. By Telegmuh.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. James Butler, a single man aged 23, was drowned at Devonporl shortly before one o'clock yesterday. Butler, who was employed by the Devonporl Borough Council, arrived hiune shortly after midday, and went out immediately for a blithe on the beach. At about five minutes to one o'clock two men, Clifford Carryer and 11. E. Hooper, who were bathing near by, saw deceased coming ashore, calling out as ho did so. They swam out towards him, but he sank before they could reach him, and some ten minutes elapsed before the body was recovered. Dr. Aitkenson endeavoured to induce artificial respiration for about forty minutes, but without success. Deceased was a son of the manager of the central mine at Broken Hill.
FATAL FALL FROM A TRAIN. Christchurch, Last Night. A painter named James Moran. a single man aged 211, died in tile hospital this morning as the result of injuries received by falling oil' a Little River train 011 Saturday (.'veiling. Deceased attended the Kuiapoi Company's picnic, and during the return journey was skylarking in the carriages ami annoying girls by blackening their faces. 'Tinguard put him out of the carriage and locked both doors. Deceased then clambered on to thi' roof of the walked along to the other end and then back again. When attempting to sit down, his foot slipped, and he was thrown to the ground clear of the train, lie was taken to tire hospital in a semiconscious condition, suffering from twoj large wounds on. the scalp, a depressed fracture of the skull, and injured lungs.
