RESULTS OF TRIENNIAL ELECTIONS NEW ACTIVITY FORESHADOWED. The results of tin: triennial elections of members of Maori Councils, which have been in progress during the past month, are now ready for publication. The elections of councils in this and neighbouring districts have resulted ill the return of the following members: Wanganui Maori Council.—Taraone Ropiha (Tnuinaruuui), Aitna te liakciwalio (Tawata), Te Wcri Haeretuterangi (Parinui), Ihaka Rereknra (I'ipiriki), Otcrea Tniwhati (Uiruliarainu), Toa Rangilahi (Uanana). Maehe Kaiiginui (Karatia), Tangioa Tajia (I'arikino), Te Ron .Matiaha (Raorikia). Wahiawa Rupiiha (I'arupara), Pamte Whakalioirangi (Karioil, Tuka Matairangi (Whanganui). Taranaki Maori Council.—Riina Whakarua (Waitotara), Riwai Hiniilirui (l'akaraka) Mann Tiime (I'urangi). Aotonga Tirua (Whenuakura). Maui Onekura (Morewerc), liokinga RangikaitU (Oaonui), Te Murunga J'arete (llawora), Tuliikaka Rupe (llawcra), Ropiha Hangihaukori (Kaipi. Waitotara). llangiahn Pikirapu (Merewere), Wi Xgapaki (Whcnnakurn), Ngalioata ISamapiiipiu (Pariroa). These are the third election- of Maori Councils that have been bold, the system being now six years old. It is stated that many of the councils have done, and are doing, exceedingly good work for the betterment of their race, but others are inclined to indolence. The Hon. A. T. Ngftta, who lias been appointed Minister in charge of these councils, is expected to liven up their work, and possibly introduce some changes. Mr. Ngata, accompanied by Judge Fisher, Under-Secretary of the Native Department, left for Auckland iroccntly on business connected with these bodies. At the recent Maori Congress held in Wellington, a sirong feeling was expressed that the powers of the councils should be increased.
