1909 RHODES SCHOLAR.
3y Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington Last Night, Allan MacDougall, of Victoria College, Wellington, was to-day selected as the Rhodes Scholar from New Zealand for 1009. There were four other candidates, namely, Alfred U. Aldridgc (Auckland University), Bruce Morison (Wanganui Collegiate School), Peter McCalluin (Canterbury College), and Hector McLean (Otago' University). His Excellency the Governor presided. There were also present Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice), Mr. Justice Cooper, Professors Segar (Auckland University), McKcnzie (Vicr toria College,), Chilton (Canterbury College), and Gilray (Otago University). Mr. MniDoug-.ill is 23 years of age, and came from Scotland with his parents nineteen years ago. Ho attended Wellington Terrace School from 1805 to ISO!) and went to Wellington College from 1900 to 11)03. At the college he won eleven prizes and three scholarships. He passed to Victoria College in 100-1. In Hie (list year there he won first prizes ill English, Latin, ami French, and repeated these successes ill 100:1. The following vein- he graduated II.A. in English, Latin, French, Mathematics, Jurisprudence, and Constitutional History, and won several prizes. Since Hint lime lie has been in constant employment as a clerk, and has had only his evenings for university work, yet he secured firstclass honours in languages and literature. He obtained his M.A. degree in 1007, and last year won the Jacob Joseph Scholarship.
