LOCAL AND GENERAL.
During a discussion on the election of of the council to the RHIe Association last night, one member urged that he would prefer as a member of the executive a. "full-blown private who will work to a stair-officer who won't." The Inspector-General of Schools has assured the Taranaki Education Board that where there are no suitable female assistants available for appointment in schools of grade 4, in which the headteacher is a woman/the Department will raKc no objection to the temporary appointment of a male assistant. One of the recently appointed pupil teachers under the Taranaki Board of Education has already resigned. In forwarding his resignation, he says: "lam taking this step as I am sura 1 should, never become a successful teacher, and am only wasting the time of other people as well as my own under the circumstances." A timely hint. The Education Board is in receipt of the following communication from the New Plymouth Borough Council: '• I nm directed to inform your 1 Board that the Council proposes early in the next financial year, after March 31st next, to reconsider Hit question of subsidies paid by them for various objects. In view of the possibility of the subsidies being reduced, in some eases withdrawn altogether, it was thought ' well to give yon this early notice, 3 o that your Board may not rely upon the subsidy in making up its estimated expenditure for the financial year." A tribute to Rotorua is paid bv Mr. R. N. Twopeuy, journalist of Melbourne, who recently spent several weeks in the hot lakes district. Mr Twonenv says it is only the want of a wide-spread knowledge of Rotorua that prevents it from being visited by an even greater number of tourists that at present patronise I d. This was Mr Twopeny's llrst visit to the Wonderland of Xi< K Zealand, and the up-to-date nature of its attractions -from both a health and tourists point of view—greatly impressed him. lie was struck with the large area of land around Rotorua, which is at present lying idle, and he expresses the opinion that when this is turned to profitable account it will be valuable asset to the Dominion in general.
