A TAIHAPE SENSATION.

Taihape, Tuesday. , A sensation occurred at Ohutu last ■ rt appears that two men named Garlick, a labourer, 25 years of age, and Uiatnela, a married man, rode to Tai* nape yesterday, returning late in the afternoon. They evidently quarrelled and got off their horses, Chatfleld being thrown over a bank. Had he reached* the river, death would have been certain, but fortunately he landed on tho >erge of a cliff. Ou being found subsequently he was iu a dazed! condition. II h assailant rode off, leading tha other horse. He made for Cliatfleld'a house, where, seizing a carving knife, lie threatened to do for the rest of the family. Fortuuatcly a uian named Oliver Present, after a desneratn struggle secured the knife. Garlick then whipped out a jackknife an.l renewed the frav, but ran "gain disarmed. Then Garlick jumped into a two-horse dray, drove to his lodgings, secured a loaded gun, and returning, threatened to shoot anyone who interfered with him. lie tried to induce some spectators to go with and show them where Chatfield was. They declined. Then he ask od for Mrs Chatfleld. Reijg told thai she had gone, lie said: "I'll gO , too." Then the gun went oft' and Garlick fell out of the cart, wounded on the lefti arm, chest, and shoulder. Tlio police and doctor were summon--e<l. Garlick'g injuries were attended to,, ii" this morning he was conveved tc Hie Wanganui Hospital.
