Mr. 0. G. Beckett, well known as a liner newspaper proprietor in various parts of the Dominion, is spending a few days iu New Plymouth. Mr. J. C. Monteliore, formerly of New llymouth and now of Hawera, was on Saturday selected out of 44 applicants' for the position of foreman to the Hawera County Council, in succession to j Mr, I'. ISashaiu, who is now engineer to the Eltliam County Council. The Council is to be complimented upon its selection of a man who, whilst not " up " in theory, has had a long experience as a road-making and bridging contractor in laranaki Mr. Monteliore has been in i.aranaki for twenty years, and has become one of the leading contractors. A telegram has been received in Eltliam announcing N the sudden death at letone of .Mr. James Sullivan, at one time licensee of the Coronation Hotel Eltham.
With regard to the retiring of civil .servants on account of the age limit of 65 years, a Press Association message from Ohristehurch states that Dr. Findlay mentioned in an interview that the appointment of a successor to Colonel Hume, Inspector of Prisons, had not yet been made, but it was now under con--sulerution.

Mr Malnita, M.L.C., will contest the by-election for the Northern Maori electorate rendered necessary in consequence of the death of Mr Hone lieke, M.P. lie will stand us an Independent member and will commence liis campaign about the 22nd inst. Mr Te Aliau intended measuring swords with Mr llenare lvaihau, M.l\, at last election, but, owing to the multiplicity of candidates in tho field, was persuaded to stand down.
Mr 11. Eyre-Kenny, S.M., who retires from th<> public service on March 31 next, hag | u , on stipendiary Magistrate of tho Nelson, Colliugwood, Takaka, Motueka and Rrightwell districts since 1004. He was bora in Canada, his father, the Hon. Lieut.-Colonel \V. 11. Kenny, being at one time n member of the New Zealand Legislative Council, He came to New Zealand as a Jail h | 1847, and was subsequently articled to the Registrar of the .Supreme Court, Auckland. He was afterwards for two' years secretary to Chief Justice Sir | George Arncy. On resigning that posi- j tion Mr Kenny commenced to practice his profession in Auckland, and remained so engaged usitil 1867 when lie accepted the position of Registrar of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth. Two years later he was appointed Resident Magistrate, and in 1870 District Jii(]ge of the district. In 1871) he was appointed District Judge for Hawke's Ray and Poverty Ray. but in 1882 he resigned to take up private practice again. In 1800 Mr Kenny re-entered the Public service as Magistrate and Warden at Westport. In 1803 he was transferred to Thames. In 1807 he was appointed Magistrate at Wellington, and two years later was transferred to tlie Wanganui district, lu 1808 he was appointed Deputy-District Judge for the District Court of Taranaki, Wanganui and Wairarapa, and jn 1004 lie assumed similar duties in Westland. .At the request of the Government he resigned in order to enable Mr Uaseldeu to be appointed Deputy-District Judge for all District Courts in New Zealand, excepting those in the Auckland province, and was then appointed Magistrate. Mr. Eyre-Kenny will probably take up his residence in New Plymouth.
