A MINING CATASTROPHE.

HO MIXERS ENTOMBED. 37 RESCUED. liondon, February 17. A colliery explosion occurred at t'ac West Stanley pit in Durham. One hundred and forty miners were en tombed. A tongue of flame destroyed the siiafting. There is no egress from the mine. Rappings have since been heard, suggesting that there arc men in the four scams still alive, Of the 147 entombed miners 37 have been rescued. It is feared that the remainder have perished. The majority of the survivors were saved through remaining in a byway until the gases cleared.

Many bodies were badly burned and mutilated.
