ISSUE OF LOANS. London, February 12. Rio Juniero is issuing in Loudon a ■ fi\e per cent loan of £1,000,000 at £92. It is now quoted at «. premium oi i'/ s per cent. Another million is also being issued on the Continent. The city of Pretoria is issuing a 4 per cent, loan of a £1,000,000 at £OS. The Transvaal .Government takes half as an investment for its savings bank and peniions. THE POTATO MARKET. Sydney, February 13. The failure of some of the local ciups and an almost certain shortage of the Tasmanian crop owing to the absence of rain are causing a hardening tendency in the potato market. It is anticipated that prices will be dear lor we rest of the year. DAIRY PRODUCE REPORT. Messrs. E. Griffiths and Co. are in receipt if the following butter market . report from their London principals, Messrs. Mills and Sparrow, dated Ist January:— : Since we last wrote we have had a day or two of very cold weather, but to-day there is. in many districts quite a sudden thaw. BUTTER. Danish.—The trade at the reduction was pretty heavy, and prices have advanced both here and in Copenhagen, the advance in Denmark _being -tine kroner, white on this side 2s to' 3s from the lowest is being made. Siberian.—A few finest have realised full figures, and in some cases 2s over last Week, but slightly easier prices arc being taken for the stored, and there is a better trade at the reduction. . French. Snow has fallen all over Normandy, and prices have jumped up very rapidly in all the country districts. On this side quotations have advanced 6d per dazen pound* on fresh rolls and 4s per cwt on salt and unsalted baskets aad firkins. Trade at the increased figurta is lor, • Australian.—The colder weather has had a beneficial effect on the market, and prices at tie close are fully 2s to 3s Higher, and still firmer prices are anticipated for the arrival per s.s. Moravian now due, although the sudden thaw has caused buyers in some instances to hold back. The s.s. Ortona ■shipment is well cleared. New Zealand.—The 5.9. Paparoa is reported to'be on fire. It is difficult to say.how far the butter aad cheese will be damaged* by the flooding of the hold in which most of this cargo was stored so as to extinguish the fire which had broken out, but the shipowners say the damage will be' pretty extensive, and that she will be about a week late in coming into port. This 1 has caused an extra sharp demand for any of the Athenic's which happened to be unsold when the 1 news arrived. There is no T thing in first hands now unsold. The s.e. Kakaia is due on the 10th, and it is hoped she will come in to schedule t,ime. . CHEESE. Canadian cheese is neglected. New Zealand. Buyers are giving their attention to New Zealand cheese, and there has been quite a good trade during the past few days, late arrivals being practically cleared.
