The Department oi Industries and Commerce is collecting suitable specimens of tin* Dominion's products and manufactures for exhibition on the occasion of the re-opening of the FrancoBritish Exhibition ill London in -Mny next. McPhcrson, supcrlintendeiit of experimental stations m the, South Island, was drawn to some affected wheat anil barley in the Totara lahi district, Otago, and he sent specimens to the Government Tiioligist (Mr. T. W. Kirk), who reported that the wheat and barley straws contained, as suspected. Hessian lly pupae, and also one Hessian tlv which had emerged in transit. Mr. Kirk stated that the Department of Agriculture some years ago, when the lly was causing serious damage in New Zealand, imported and liberated a number of natural enemies of the lly—pemiotelliis pigripes and platygaster minutns—and from tinstraws received from the Tolnratahl district, when placed in a breeding cage, eidlt of these useful little insects emerged" This showed, Mr. Kirk added, that these natural enemies of the lly are still (plentiful in the Dominion, and will, he felt sure, soon breed and control the pest as they have done hi past year.-.
