HAINING STREET GAMBLING HOUSES

In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. Hiddcll, S.M., Now Bee, Joe Lin and Kong Young, were charged with having used their houses in Haraing street a» common gaming houses. The sale of pak-a-poo tickets was alleged also. The defendants, who pleaded, not guilty, applied through their solicitor (Mr. Hmlnum) for a remand. This was grunted, and Wednesday next was fixed as the day of hearing. Bail was allowed in the sum of £SO for each defendant.

Light Europeans and one Chinaman! were in the houses as visitors at the time of the raid. They were all charged with being found 011 premises which were common gaming houses. The defendants were Henry Mclaughlin (bootmaker), Peter Lapayne (wharf laborer) Thomas Williams (gardener), , Thomas Hughes (wharf laborer), James Vanbnrssum (carpenter), and Tim Kum of ITaming street. All but 011 cof the Europeans pleaded guilty, though Yanborssum qualified 'his plea by saying that he had gone into the house to" get a cigarette from a friend who was there, lie did not know that the place was a

gaming house. He thought it would have had a notice 011 it in such a case as provided by the Act. The .Magistrate, replied that this a mounted to a plea of not guilty, whereupon the defendant withdrew it, saying lie wanted the case disposed of, and that lie had work to go to now after, having been out of work for sixteen weeks.
