The death took place at W'aijmwa on' Friday of Mr. Joseph Staunton, in charge ! ot' the local ipost oihee. Deceased was for some years postmaster at Milton and other Otago towns, and for Iwq years had charge of the Manahi (South Taranaki) post ollice. Mr. ttwunton. who was about fifty-live years of age, was twice married, but had no family. It<; was au estimable man, and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Mr. James F.ade, son of Mr. Charles Kade, Eltham, lias obtained his M.I!, degree, Otago University. He has now received from St. Paul's Church, Wangnnui, the appointment of medical missionary for China. In recording Mr. Ende's progress the local Aigus says it is tlin outcome of steady perseverance and hard work. "He lias hud no special facilities at his disposal, his father being Imt a working man, but by diligent study and making the most of his opportunities the young man has acquired his present honourable position. His name may not bccomo quite so famous throughout the Dominion as that of some muscular youths who kick goals at football, compile a big cricket score or win a tennis match, imt it is not hard to see which has made the best use of his time and done the most good for the world in general." Ex-Detcetive Henderson, for over 41 years in the police service, (lied at the Auckland District Hospital on Wednesday night, aged (12 years. Deceased was born near Aberdeen, Scotland, and came out to New Zealand at the age of II), joining the armed constabulary. Mr. Henderson served in connection with the gold escorts in the early days of the Otago goldficlds. He subsequently joined the police as a mounted trooper, and worked his way up to be chief detective at Duuedin, a position he held for many years. He also acted in a. similar capacity in Ohristchurch and Wellington, and seven years ago was transferred to Auckland. In August last he was retired on pension. Mr. Henderson had been in failing health for some time, and was admitted to the hospital soon after the new year.
