CANADIAN INDIAN BEATS DORANDO.

ITALIAN SAYS HE WAS TRIPPED LONG-BOAT WINS MAKATJION JN NEW YORK. Doraudo, the Italian runner who was presented with a gold cup by Queen Alexandra for his splendid performance in the Marathoa Race from Windsor to the White City Stadium, and who defeated Hayes, the winner of this year's .great Olympic event at Madison-square Gardens, New York, on November 25 last, was beaten at the same place and over the same distance— miles—on Tuesday by Longboat, the Canadian Indian runner (says the London Daily Mail of December ID). The following are the chief times of tho race:— Eive miles SSmin. 27 -l-ssce. Dorando leading a yard. Ten miles sSniin. 57 l-ssec. lmhi, ilsec. faster than llayes' race. Dorando still leading. 15 miles Ihr. ttUmiii. 2 2-osec. Position unchanged.

Longboat forged aln-ad at the fourteenth mile and kept tin* lead for eight laps, when Dorando regained the lead. Twenty miles 2hr. ;Jmin. .*><S Longboat leading a yard. Dorando three lap* later regained his old position. Twenty-live miles 2hr. !57nihi. 2-f>see. Dorando leading; tne Indian smiling. A few minutes later Dorando fell and quitted the race. Longboat tinUhed the running at a I magnilicent pace, amid terriJie applause. Time, 2hr. -b'nnin. "j 2-."> sec. | I'OUL ALLEGED. The following are liie limes at the previous race at Madisou-s<jtmrc Gardens:— Hr. Min. Sec. Dorando ... 2 .. 4-1 .. 20 1-3 Hayes 2.. 45 .. 1- 1-5 Dorando asserts vehemently that he did not collapse. This i* his statement: " Longboat was a little ahead. I tried to pass him. He -threw out his leg, caught mine, and tripped me. f fell oil my hip 011 the rail and could not get up. 1 was not tired at all, and watched Longboat, and saw he was very tired. I would have beaten him easily, and will run him again to-morrow or any time he will give me 11 race. The track was too soft, it was not like the track J ran 011 when i beat iiayes.'' Martin Sheridan, the famous runner, who had a clear view of the Italian')? collapse, declares that Longboat did not touch his rival, and adds that Doraudo was " all in/'

Tom Flanagan, Longboat's trnhiev, says: "The ludiau followed our instruc tions. His spurts were intended to take the heart out of the Italian. The fast laps, when Longboat made the pace, killed Doraudo ol! and caused his collapse. Longboat was fresh, and could have gone much faster, if il hau ueen necessary." CUEEItED 13Y 14,000 SPECTATORS. The scene that ensued when Dorando fell bullies description. Au awert hush spread instantly over the vast assembly of 14,000 cheering spectators, as, fainting, with face distorted in agony, the Italian was carried oil' the rack—he himself in tears—4>y his weeping brother and assistants.

Then a volcanic roar of applause arose as Longboat, with ever wider strides, sped over the remaining laps like a greyhound. Foremost among those to congratulate him was an Indian in tho full war-paint of his fathers and a dusky skinned maiden to whom he is betrothed. WHY LONGBOAT WON. A delightful romance arising out of the Marathon race culminated 011 Thursday in the formal betrothal of Tom Longboat, vanquisher of Dorando, and Lorclla Maracle, a beautiful blackhaired Indian maiden. The couple will be married 011 December HO.

Loretta is a "college girl" and the daughter of wealthy parents, who live in the Tyendinagu Indian reservation in Ontario. She fell 111 love • with Lhe runner at first sight, but neither Longboat's father nor the lady's would agree to their marrying. Full-blooded Indians, it appears, do not nowadays believe in such youthful marriages. However, the couple went haiul-in-hand to the girl's father, to whom Longboat said. "If 1 beat Dorando 1 take Loretta. If I lose I give her up." The elder Indian grunted assent in the Fenimore Cooper manner, and said, " It is good/' '•So," as the girl, her black cvea radiant with contentment, explained to-day, " Tom simply had to win,'' Doraudo, live girl avers, heard of this love compact, and boasted that, lie would make Loretta faint, in despair, as Hayes's lianeee bad done during the first race. Everyone noticed when the twentieth miles was completed and the issuo was still seemingly in doubt, though Long-' boat was leading, that the Indian suddenly paused, tur.i<-d sideways, and nodded brightly. "That nod.*' explained the girl, "was intended for me. It meant 'l'll win.' I rushed to the railing in response unij waved my band, signalling 4 Jf you win, I'll marrv you,'"

••And,',' as Longboat exultantly declared with a bright smile, "my sweetheart came in the nick of time and nerved me to a supreme effort which e\l« hausted Dorando's reserves of strength and won the race for me."
