A deputation of Indian Mahomedans suggested that of the six members of the Viceroy Executive Council one should be a native Mahomedan and another a Hindu. Lord Morley, Secretary for India, in reply, emphasised that the appointment I of an Indian member was intended as a signal proof that race was uo disability to the attainment of the highest trust, "but no man was selected either as a Hindu or a Mahomedan. While ready to make one of the» six he saw uo change of appointing two natives to the Council.
! He added, in reference to other sug--1 gestions, that separate electoral colleges for Maliomcduns could possibly b<> arranged. Lord Morley, in the course of conciliatory remarks, declared that the recent scheme in connection with the administration of the affairs generally of India, was welcomed in India. He emphasised the goodwill felt by the Government towards the Indian Civil Service. He also derived encouragement from President Roosevelt's utterances in regard to .the way in which Britain was discliarg*, ing her trust in India.
