The Daily News THURSDAY, JANUARY 27. THE MAYORALTY.
The timely invitation conveved to his Worship the. .Mayor, .Mr. Ci." Tiseh, at Holiday evening's Korougli Council meeting, by ilr. Fred Hellringer, lo consent to accept nomination for another term 'to the chief civic ollice is one that wo are persuaded is warmly supported by all sections of the burgesses. While we ■are opposed, as a matter of principle, to the ollice of ilayor being monopolised 'by any individual, we entirely agree with ilr. Jiellringer that one term is too short for a man to do jusiue to himself and the position. Tin- management of ji business of the dimensions of a progressive municipality, especially one controlling coiuiiierical enterprises, is mertaiuly no sinecure, and the details oi
■tile various departments cannot be I ■mastered ia a week. And until a Mayor ■has obtained a thorough grasp! of the ivorkiug of these departments, he canuot, with conlidencc, embark 011 a "policy.'' It is clear, therefore, that just ■when a new Mayor has acquired the 'necessary knowledge for directing the ■municipality's all'airs to the. best advan'tage, tile end of his one-year term is in sight. The law decrees that while councilors' tirni of oliice is two years, the Mayoral chair must be vacated annually, ho far as the present year is concerned t here have been no works of outstanding magnitude undertaken, but a good deal of thought has been given to considering ways and means for a number of necessary and fairly costly works that has to be commenced in the near future. It is certainly in the interests of the borough, therefor*.', that the ■Mayor and councillors who are conversant with these requirements should 'luvvc the opportunity of putting their ripened judgment into practise. Mr. T'isch, during his term as Mayor, has> devoted himself to tfhe duties of the oliice with commendable Zealand energy. The shortage of funds prevented the undertaking of any new works of iniporl■iincc, and in that respect Mr. Tisch lias not had the opportunity of signalising bis mayoralty by any ambitious work. To a certain extent, therefore, the municipal year may he said to have been •a quiet one, devoted l principally to street maintenance and the steady progress with the electric light, drainage, waterreticulation, -and channelling, while the negotiations with the Railway Department to secure portion of the old railway route and bridge for the purpose of a stock road resulted in a settlement satisfactory to the ratepayers. The committee work of the Council during the year has been very heavy, and the Mavor has shouldered 'his full share of this little appreciated .duty. In the particular sphere of his labors as our loading citizen in which he has specialised—the improvement of the sea-shore —Mr. Tisch lias earned the gratitude of the citizens, ami in this connection has 'done more to mark liis term of oliice than could have been accomplished liy ■almost any oilier means. There is, ■therefore, every reason why the burgesses should desire to show their confidence in, Mr. Tisch. for another term, and we are sure it will be. with considerable satisfaction they will learn this morning that we have Mr. Tisch's acceptance of the Council's invitation to allow himself to be .nominated' for the .Mayoralty for a second 1 term. We scarcely anticipated there will be a contested election, but should there be, ill. the present state of public opinion, we have no fear of the result.
