TURF TOPICS. (By "Moluroa.'') Piihiatua races on Wednesday. The Takaipuna Cup will be rui". on Friday next, Sid. Reid, who recently dropped into the cosy job of private trainer to Mr. D. Buick, struck trouble at Trentham on 'Saturday, his riding of Consolation in the Wallacevillc Welter not being altogether satisfactory, and the stewards promptly rubbed him out for twelve months. It is pelasing to see that racing clubs are waking up to u. sense of their responsibilities, and the sport will be, all the better for the display of a little backbone.

Not a single favorite prevailed on the opening day at Foxton, and punters for the most part "did their coin hard." Moose. was "hot stud" for tlie hurdles on Friday, but after running prominently to the. turn faded into the division which pays no dividend. The Tiiranaki-owned White Star and Mendip were double-winners at Foxton, but punters about these parts were too busy watching Trentham doings to benefit by their wins. There is always more money to be picked up. at the smaller meetings, but the sports cannot recognise it until they are mournfully reading the results. White Star won the Foxton Cup from end to end. 11. Gilbert, who the winuers, has been successful three times this season, and on each occasion has landed a, cup race. Black Banner at Waihi and White Star at Stratford and I'oxtpn are his wins and for a youngster |ip promises well. Kirsty was an odds-on favorite for the .Flying Handicap, but did not get through in time to catch the consistent Lady Mciisehikoff, who scored by a head.

Till' finishes lit Foxton were uniformly close iiiul exciting, and bettor racing has never been seen on the fourse. Nearly every nice resulted ill neck a-nci neek itnishes and even if results did 'iiot please the punters, the luindicapper had reason to feel proud of the success of liis adjustments. Tin; imiovatried l>y tlio l'oxton Club, of llxlng numbers to the bridles of horses was ii d'istinet success, the jnd"e and! those who witnessed the experiment expressing their entire approbiit'ioji of Urn new departure, and it behoves committees of Tnrannki clubs to enijiiire i'ilto the new depaituie, I whieli undoubtedly minimises the chances of mistakes being made by the

man in the box. The consistent Flitaway, -who has vac- ( ed with bad luck this season, scored a lon" overdue win in the City Handicap at Trenthain on Saturday. _ There was considerable excitement a.t Miramar on Thursday wlicn a report was circulated that some individual stationed at the entrance to the straight had tried to block the favorite, who was lending For the race, by obstructing it with a fair-sized plank of wood. The police bore down upon the alleged evildoer. and hustled him. off the course and heaved him on to the good hard road like a sack of chaff. Further enquiries pointed to the probability that the rumor was only a hoax. Anyway, one sport lost his day's fun in consequc-ce.
