MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

RETURN OF CRIMINAL CASES. The annual returns of'•criminal business transacted in the Magistrate 3 Court at New Plymouth during 1008 are now available, and by the com tesy of the elerk, Mr. J. Terry, we are able to publish the following information:— The number of persons taken into enstodv, summoned or apprehended during the year was 321 (301 males and 20 females)*, of whom 235 males and 13 females were summarily convicted; 41 discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence; 21 dismissed on merits; 11 committed for trial or sentence; j)g lined; 12 punished by peremptory imprisonment, and 7 imprisoned jn lieu ot fine or surety; 68 orders were made; and 66 defendants convicted and discharged with. a. caution, of which num|>er 62 were drunkenness cases. Ao females were imprisoned during the year. Under the heading of assault, nine nersons were charged, three dismissed, two committed, and four summarily convicted. There was only one case of Kearny, two of attempted suicide, and 12 of theft. Eighty-seven cases of dninkconesß were dealt with, and 2( males and one female fined.
