WELLINGTON SCRATOHINGS. Wellington, Last Night. Tawaki anil Kina have been scratched for the, Wellington Stakes. TIM? TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") | ' The Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting will be continued at Trcntluuu to-day. Cyrene, did not accept for the January | Welter, but figures in the Disposal Stakes. ' Osiris meets Plingot on 41bs better terms in the Mungaroa Welter than when he suffered defeat by lialf-a-head in the Trentham Handicap, and Flingot's victory in that race was mostly owing to I''. 1). Jones' clever riding. In the Wellington Stake* recent winners in Theodore., Gipsy Belle and Armlet will measure strides, and an exciting race should eventuate.
: Arljilleric, Muskerry and Ikon are likely starters in the Wellington E.G. Handicap. The l'orirtia candidate,.Taitoko, will be a starter in the Metropolitan Handicap to-day, and seems to have got over his recent ailment and is looking very well just now. ■ The Duro t'uu has drawn a slashing crnwxt of hacks. Ijonguer, Merrivoina and Te Kahurangi have, all won races, and may hold their own in open company later on. Good fields should contest «very race at the Foxtail meeting, which opens today. Ta.ra.naki horses ,are well engaged and a good deal of local interest will be centred on the gathering. The opening event, the Hack Hurdle race, has drawn ten acceptors, including Moose, Scenery and Don Carlos, who have been winning lately, besides a number of new horses at the topping game whose performances will be watched with interest.
! Alcmlip won at the Taranaki and Stratford meetings, and will measure strides with Awlia and! North-oast, a pair of promising horses, in the Electric Handicap. :' Nine horses are canted for the Foxton Cup, run over a. mile and a-quarter. Stayboy, Kilmarnock and White Star sported silk sucecssfuly at the Taranaki holiday meetings, and are a worthy trio. White Star will have the services of Gilbert, who steered him to virion- in the Stratford. Cup. . In the Dash Handicap, four furlongs Langshau and Clonpett are well up in the weights, hut over a short journey weight does not count for much. I liillow, Lady llensehikoh, Kirstv, Mallet, Miss Vera and Aslraca also claim engagements at the meeting. I The Fox ton KaeiligCluli intend trying a new system of number attached to liridles, the idea being to assist the (judge ill giving his decisions, and to minimise the liability to make mistakes. Tn a close linish it is quite impossible to read any but the nearest saddle-cloth Kigjure, and the new idea is certainly (worthy of trial. The dilliciilty appears : to rest in fixing the numbers securely to the bridles, 'but no doubt the Foxton Hub have surmounted this apparent obstacle, and the result of the experiment \vill soon be manifested. Any innovation that makes for the improvement of racing deserves encouragement, and !n giving the system a, trial the club is to be highly commended.
