WHANGAMOMORA COUNTY COUNCIL.
I (From Our Own Correspondent). The ordinary mo.ithly meeting of tlie AYlkingiiiiiontuiisi County Council was held on the lstli insl. at WlmugamoI hioim, when there were present: Mr. ■\Y. A. McCntehau (chairman), and Lis. ■T. JMilroy, .1. M. .lones, A. Meredith, .1. Anderson, E. 13. Robinson and It. AlcI (.luggage. ■ The Council went into committee to open tenders for con tract No, 3, papaburning on Whitiangi road, and accepted Mint of Messrs. uirtin and Slattery. The special orders in connection with tln> Cppcr Mangaehu No. 1 loan of £15(10, and the Whangamomona road Xo. 1 loan of .t«UO, and the gazetting of noxious weeds within the county, were confirmed. • On the motion of Crs. Anderson, seconded by Cr. Met luggage, it was resolved, That, in the event of a favorable reply being received from the Governnient, re the loan proposals, tenders be called to close in a fortnight's time for papa-burning in connection with the ■Whangaiiioinonii road metalling, and that Crs. Anderson, MeCluggae and the Miairiuun be empowered to deal with same. ' Mr. .lanes moved and Mr. Mcllrov seconded. That subject to the District Road Engineer's approval being obtained, tenders for the Mangaehu road formation be called to close in a fortnight, the riding members to deal with them.
1 The engineer's report was read and adopted. • Correspondence was dealt with as follows:—From Mrs. Jamieson, re grazing on pound site.—On the motion of Crs. Anderson and Mcllroy, it was resolved, •That Mrs. Janiieson be authorised to graze travelling stock in terms of her offer. From F. Neilson, applying for position of surfaceman.—Cr. Mcllroy moved, and Cr. McCluggage seconded, That consideration of F. Ncilson's application be deferred until next meeting of the Council.—Carried. ' Mr. Newing waited on the Council with a request that it maintain a road tt'hich he had constructed on his own property at a considerable cost, the surveyed line being too cir/cuitous.—The Council regretted that it could not see its way to expend its funds on private property. Cr. McCluggage moved and Cr. Me> Cubchan seconded, That a sum not exceeding .CSO be expended on the North Makahu road, as asked for by Mr. Newing, in making necessary repairs, the engineer to put the work in hand at the earliest possible moment.—Carried. It was resolved that the Council regret it cannot legally allow Mr. Klee to erect a porch to his premises, as such would form an obstruction on the road line. - The surfacemen were granted the following holidays on full pay, viz., Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Tho matter of acquiring the freehold of the pound site was deferred until the visit of the Minister of Lands to the district. It was decided, on the motion of Crs. Jones and Meredith, That the Government be requested to make a further subsidy on the iSSOO loan for the /Brewer road, and that a copy of the Council's resolution be forwarded to the member for the district, together with such further information that he may require. ■ The engineer was empowered to make arrangements with the contractor (Mr. G. Sangster) to expend the "thirds" already scheduled for the purpose opposite the Makahu factory. ■ Mr. R. J. Speck wrote asking for an increase in rate of payment for road work, and it was resolved, on the motion, of Crs. McCluggage and McCutchan, That as the Council has just refused the application of one of its men for an increase in wages, it cannot see its way to make an exception in the ease. The engineer was authorised to carry out all necessary repairs to the two bridges on the Putikituna road, and also to the wash-out on the said road. . The Maifco Road School Commissioners are to be. requested to have the blackberry now in fruit in the school grounds destroyed, and that the District Roads Engineer be requested to have the blackberry at the foot of the Whangamomona Saddle (Pohokura side) removed. : The elevk was instructed to write to the. Treasury asking if the. Council or the Stratford County Council should take steps to raise the 10 per cent, on the £OOO loan on the Kohuratahi road, i The eugineer was authorised to expend up to £4O in filling, *-ulverting and cutting drains in connection with ■the drainage works in the township. ■ Consideration of the question of building Council offices was held over until next meeting. The following resolution was carried, on the motion of Crs. McCutchan and McCluggage:—That as the districts upon the route of the Stratford-Ongaruhe section of the North Island Main Trunk railway system have not hitherto been favored bv visits from Sir Joseph Ward Minister" for Lands) ami the Hon. -Mr. Hogg. the. newly-appointed .Minister for ■Roads and Bridges, and as the settleis over this extensive area of settled country are very desirous for Ministerial inspection of the results of the development work so energetically carried out during the past fifteen years, and for examination as to the means it is desirable to foster in order to promote future welfare and expansion, this Council very cordially invites both Ministers to visit these areas during the recess, assuring them of a warm welcome -and hearty reception from the local bodies administering, therein and from .resident settlers. It was decided to forward copies of the resolution to tie' Stratford and Oliura County Councils, with a request for the endorsement of the same. ~ .
